Cenerentola (Cinderella) like the young girl in the fairytale has two older and richer sisters who get invited to the Prince’s ball while she has to stay at home. The Cenerentola wine belongs to an appellation called Orcia born on February 14th 2000 (Valentine’s Day) between the territories of the Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The Orcia region is consequently the youngest, between the “sisters”, that get invited to the tables of prices and kings.
The magic that brings Cenerentola to beat her sisters and wine over the Prince charming is a Tuscan grape variety abandoned about a century ago, the Foglia Tonda, that together with Sangiovese forms a very intriguing blend: the first is elegant the second is powerful. Donatella Cinelli Colombini, practically in the role of the fairy in the tale wagers on this strange couple and it takes her 15 years to create a wine: from the cultivation of the vines, harvesting, vinification and barrel ageing. A tenacious job that is now bringing up the sales figures and the reviews from the international wine critics: for some years it has crossed the magical 90/100 line in international ratings and, in the last few vintages, it has reached 93/100. Cenerentola is becoming a cult wine, different from any other and with a little crown on the label because, just as in the fairytale, this wine now has its Prince Charming
2021 had started badly with a spring frost that, fortunately, only grazed the Fattoria del Colle but caused a drastic drop in temperatures preventing the birth of new shoots. There were therefore about 20 days of distance between the first leaves born at the beginning of April and those at the end of the month. The frost and the three summer months without rain produced a drastic decline in the bunches and the size of the grapes that, at harvest, resembled Pinot Noir more than Sangiovese. A cool September that became cold at night, offered the ideal conditions for a slow and regular ripening of the grapes. The result is a wine that combines power, freshness and longevity.
